IEC/IEEE 82079-1 Ed. 2 ‘Preparation of information for use (instructions for use) of products – Part 1: Principles and general requirements’ is the most important standard for technical communicators.
Published in 2019 by the three international standards organizations IEC, ISO and IEEE, it is the inter-organizational consensus of principles and general requirements for the preparation of information for use. It covers all products in the scope of these organizations and applies to both electrotechnical and non-electrotechnical products as well as for software.
In the near future the standard might be under revision. What needs to be addressed in the next revision of the standard?
The responsible standards committees of the standard IEC TC 3 ‘Documentation, graphical symbols and representations of technical information’ and ISO TC 10 ‘Technical product documentation’/ SC 1‘Basic conventions’ have circulated a document to collect opinions on the need of a revision and which inputs might be addressed.
